Bible account: David and Goliath

David and Goliath: Trusting Jehovah When the Challenge Looks Too Big

The account of David and Goliath in 1 Samuel chapter 17 shows that real courage does not come from size, status, or human strength. David trusted in Jehovah, and that changed how he viewed the giant in front of him.

The setting

Goliath challenged Israel and filled the army with fear. David, though young, did not see the situation the same way.

David’s confidence

David came against Goliath “in the name of Jehovah,” showing that his trust was in God, not in his own strength.

The lesson

Problems may look overwhelming, but they are small when compared with Jehovah’s power and ability to help.

The Account of David and Goliath

The Bible account of David and Goliath tells of a young shepherd who faced a giant warrior when no one else would. For 40 days, Goliath challenged the army of Israel, and fear held them back. David, however, looked at the situation differently. He was not focused on Goliath’s size, armour, or weapons. He was focused on Jehovah.

When David approached Goliath, he made it clear where his confidence came from. He said he was coming “in the name of Jehovah of armies.” David understood that the battle belonged to Jehovah. With that faith, he used a sling and a stone, struck Goliath, and the giant fell.

What We Can Learn

This account is not just about bravery. It teaches us to look at difficult situations from Jehovah’s standpoint. The Israelite army saw how big Goliath was. David saw how small Goliath was compared with Jehovah.

That lesson is practical today. We may face pressure, fear, opposition, or problems that seem too big for us. But like David, we can remember that we are not limited to our own strength. Faith helps us face challenges with courage because we trust that Jehovah can support those who rely on him.

A Practical Thought

David did not wait until he felt bigger than the problem. He acted because he trusted Jehovah more than he feared Goliath. That is a powerful reminder: courage is not the absence of fear. It is choosing to rely on Jehovah even when the challenge looks intimidating.

When we face our own “giants,” we can ask: Am I comparing this problem only to myself, or am I viewing it in comparison with Jehovah’s power?
